African Dance is a culturally enriched class based on historical movement from West African culture. This is the foundation of IDC dance. Our goal is for all youth to experience the rich history and movement of this cultural art form.
Dance Basics I
This class serves as an introduction to the art of dance for 3- and 4-year-olds. Ballet, Modern, Jazz, and African dance styles are explored in this class to allow a well-rounded dance foundation. Basic terms and positions are coupled with rhythmic movement in a fun, interactive 45-minute class.
Dance Basics II
This class serves as an introduction to the art of dance for dancers ages 5, 6, and 7 years of age. Following the format of Dance Basics I, four styles of dance are explored in this class: Ballet, Modern, Jazz, and African dance. Dance Basics I is not a prerequisite for this class. However, Dance Basics II incorporates and expands upon the foundation taught to Dance Basics I students.
Ballet I
This class serves as a formal introduction to Ballet, where dancers will learn the building blocks of this classic dance style. It is great for beginners who desire to gain body awareness, discipline, flexibility, and/or elevation to the performing company.
Ballet II
In this class, intermediate-level skills and techniques are taught to build on the formation developed in a beginning ballet class. This is an intermediate Ballet class and requires assessment for placement.
Ballet III
The class dives into the more advanced terminology, skills, and techniques of classical ballet using the Vaganova style and method. Vaganova was developed in Russia and is still used in their highest-level academies today, deeming it as one of the most applicable methods to other schools of instruction. This is an advanced Ballet class and requires assessment for placement.
Our pre-point class prepares advanced ballet dancers for pointe shoes using a mixture of Russian, Vaganova, Cecchetti, and American methods of instruction. This class is by assessment only as core strength is essential for students preparing for pointe.
Modern I
This class serves as a formal introduction to Modern dance, where dancers learn various schools of thought in Modern dance techniques. It is great for beginners who desire to gain body awareness, spatial awareness, core strength, and/or elevation to the performing company.
Modern II
This is an intermediate Modern dance class and requires assessment for placement. The instruction further develops the dancer’s knowledge of various skills, techniques, and concepts from the Graham and Horton Modern dance technique. These two styles are taught worldwide and will equip the dancers with the necessary foundation for advanced modern movement.
Modern III
This is an advanced Modern dance class that requires assessment for placement. This class is designed to build Modern techniques to an intermediate-advanced level by way of a consistent focus on Graham and Horton technique, while also studying Laban’s theories of movement. This class dives into higher-level concepts of modern dance, incorporating the knowledge acquired in lower-level classes.
In this class, dancers will develop a strong foundation in authentic and modern jazz movements. These two styles will be accompanied by on-the-floor tricks/movement. Students in this class must be in Ballet II or higher to ensure a strong technical foundation before the introduction of the fun concepts taught in this class.
